Most Responsible
Mitch McConnell
U.S. Senator — Kentucky · Senate Republican leader, 2007–2025
Senate Majority Leader on January 6, 2021, and Minority Leader from January 20 of that year. At the second impeachment trial he voted to acquit, arguing the Senate had no jurisdiction over a president who had already left office, and then told the chamber the same afternoon that there was no question the president was practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of that day. He stepped down as Republican leader in January 2025 after eighteen years and is not seeking re-election in 2026.
